Diabetes Mellitus

Often referred to as “Diabetes” is a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high Blood sugar, either because the body cannot produce enough of insulin, or cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced.
This high blood sugar produces the classical symptoms of polyurea (frequent urination) polydipsia (increased thirst) and polyphagia (increased hunger)

Types of  “Diabetes” Mellitus:

Type.1: Results from body failure to produce insulin & also ensure as insulin dependant “Diabetes” mellitus (IDDM) juvenile Diabetics.

Type.2: Results from insulin resistance a condition in which cells fail to use insulin properly.

Type .3: Gestational Diabetes is when pregnant women who have never had Diabetes before have a high blood glucose level during pregnancy.

The classical symptoms are.

  • Polyuria frequent urination)
  • Poly dipsia(increased thirst)
  • Polyphagia (increased hunger)
    • Long term complication of DM lead to risk of:
    • Atherosclerosis
    • IHD peripheral
    • Vascular disease.
    • Diabetic Retinopathy
    • Nephropathy
    • Neuropathy (Diabetic foot)

Diagnosis:
DM is characterized by recurrent or persistent hyperglycemia and is diagnosed by demonstrating any one of the following.

Fasting plasma glucose level >7.0 mmol/L (126mg/dL)
Plasma glucose >11.1 mmol/L (200mg/dL) two hour after a 75g oral glucose load as in a “glucose” tolerance test
Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAIC)>6.5%

Management:
Apart from medication a proper diet, regular exercises and precautions are the foundations of Diabetic care with greater amount of workouts yielding better results.

We  at  Re-Live Orthopaedic Physiotherapy & Wellness Clinic follow the protocol given below when we take up a person for Diabetic exercise programme.

  1. An initial assessment is done comprising of a detailed blood, urine glucose test and a lipid people along with patients own complaints, symptoms.
  2. An exercise programme is then developed to be effective, keeping in mind individuals:
    • Personal goals and needs
    • Safety
    • Physical complaints and/ or other ailments.
    • Life style.      
  3. Usually Diabetic exercise programme

Frequency: 3-4 days a week
Duration: 45 mins- 1 hour.

Group exercise session can be prescribed or a Tailor made programme can be advised to the individual seeking such services.
